Anonymous Confessions Go Online With SecretTweet

Fri, Feb 27th, 2009

True confessions are no longer restricted to reality shows, chapels, diaries and drunken phone calls. Now, any Internet user with something to get off her chest can unburden herself via SecretTweet, a Web site that accepts and funnels anonymous submissions into a public Twitter stream.

Submissions range from off-the-cuff musings to scandalous revelations. For example, a recent entry read, “I shoplift in every single store I shop at,” while another simply said, “I frequently think of leaving it all to do escort work.” Other confessions are darker in tone, such as, “I secretly feel a twinge of joy when I see co-workers I don’t like go out for a smoke. I am glad they are shortening their lives.”

Since SecretTweet began accepting submissions in April 2008, the Web site has logged close to 24,000 nameless declarations, all untraceable down the I.P. address, according to the site’s creator, Kevin Smith, a 21-year-old graphic design student in West Virginia.
