Save the Netbooks: fighting a trademark on extinct hardware
Save the Netbooks! That's the theme of a new campaign that is trying to fight a trademark threat that could potentially result in the renaming of the product that we have come to know and love as the netbook. The grassroots movement is hoping that enough concerned citizens voice their feedback to ultimately convince the offending company to back off, but it may be a long road before that happens.
Didn't know netbooks needed saving? Then you haven't been following the sordid story of an old "netbook" maker and the trademarks that the company is still wielding in hopes of profiting from the recent popularity of netbooks. It all goes back to 1996 when a Canadian company named Psion first filed for a trademark application related to its Psion netBook line launched in 1999. The model floated around for a few years without gaining much popularity, and was eventually discontinued in 2003.
