Pastor John Warren gave the invocation. Aretha Franklin sang My Country ‘Tis of Thee. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens swore in Joe Biden as vice president first. Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Anthony McGill and Gabriela Montero performed “Air and Simple Gifts” by John Williams. And 146 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, before the Capitol building built in part by slaves, Barack Obama took the oath of office using the Lincoln Bible that hadn’t been used inauguration since 1861.
